Jerry Hatch, In Memoriam

One of the more colorful members of Timber Valley left us on August 23, 2022. Jerry Hatch passed away in his sleep August 23. He would have been 90 years old October 23, 2022. Jerry and Darlene Hatch moved into Timber Valley April 3, 2000. The sign in front of their lot read: Here lives an old grouch and a lovely young chick.

Jerry served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He and Darlene were married for 64 years and they traveled for 25 years before moving into Timber Valley.

Jerry was an avid fisherman, often fishing every day. His fishing companion, Cheryl Warfel, tells how they would catch bass and then throw them up into the air. The circling osprey would snatch the bass up as quickly as they landed back on the water. Jerry also loved crabbing and he and Darlene were famous for providing and cooking the crab for the annual September Crab Rally.

Jerry loved telling stories almost as much as fishing. He told of a boyhood escapade when he fell through the ice on the river. He managed to climb out onto an ice floe only to discover it was floating him farther downstream. He climbed back into the icy water. Obviously he survived. He also told about the cougar that would come by his place and simply stare at him.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Darlene and three sons, Peter, Paul and Fred; also three daughters: Jenine Alvin, Julie Walker, and Jennell Sympson.

Jerry’s daughter, Janine, advises that the funeral and Celebration of Life will be held November 5, at 1p.m. at the John Newman Catholic Church, 5101 Alton Parkway, in Irvine, California. Darlene is residing in an assisted living facility. She would appreciate cards and phone calls from Timber Valley friends: Her address is 33 Creek Rd. Apt. 203, Irvine, California, 92604. Telephone number: 949-618-3995.

You Missed Sex in the Garden!! (Friday August 26 Presentation)

Melinda Stanfield, Lot #2, presented a very knowledgeable and enjoyable talk during last Friday’s social hour at 3 pm. As an experienced gardener, when her zucchinis were flowering but not producing any fruit, she researched the problem. She discovered the sun was not reaching them early in the morning when the bees do most of their work visiting both female and male plants to accomplish pollination. Melinda became like the busy bees and visited the plants daily, transferring pollen from the male blossoms to the female herself with a small brush and, Eureka!!, baby zucchinis resulted. Using slides, she shared different ways flowers and fruit are pollinated by insects and even hummingbirds.

Did you know honey bees are an invasive species brought to this country from Europe? They now have become important due to the method of mass gardening; hives are trucked into large orchards to maintain our food supply.

And corn should be planted in rows; the more rows, the better. Pollination is a result of wind blowing male pollen from the tassels onto the female silk. Male sex cells move down each silk to meet a single egg which matures into a single kernel of corn.

Appreciation was shown to Melinda with a specially designed garden green T-shirt. More T-shirts will be available.

The Community Garden Group will continue to hold educational sessions on the 4th Fridays of the month. Plan to attend future fun, educational events. Watch for the announcement of subjects during the coming months.

Please Take Your Debris Piles to the Truck in the Storage Area

Just a friendly reminder that you the leaseholder are responsible for taking cuttings and other vegetation to the storage area. You can drop your debris in the back of the truck. The Landscape Committee works hard keeping our common areas presentable and clean.

Thank you — Sandy Weaver

The Devil In the Router

By Fred Prout

I write this as a reformed Luddite. Cancel progress. Too much is too much!

Bring back the golden days of radio when we could use our imagination. Orson Wells could play The Thin Man, Lake Woebegone Days kept our interest, and we didn’t know, or care, that Amos and Andy and The Kingfish were white guys. I now savor progress. I have all the electronics. Wide screen color hi def tv, iPad, smart phone and, yes, internet. No way could I exist without them. Continue reading

From Both Sides Now

By Jackie Deal
(Blame Fred Prout, he started this!)

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It’s clouds illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all.

Joni Mitchell was 23 in a black period of her life, one of many. She wrote the most famous song of her career “Both Sides Now” while flying and looking out the window at the clouds. Ironically, it was Judy Collins who first sang it and made it a hit. At such a young age, Joni was looking at love and life as we all have. Truly there was more illusion than reality when in our 20s we though we knew all about love and life. Remember those days? Were we wise enough to realize that we were peering up into the unknown? That what we thought was surety was an illusion? Continue reading

Amber and the Prescription RX

By Jackie Deal

“Just insert the syringe (no needle) into the corner of the cat’s mouth and squirt in the medicine.”

Amber has been prescribed an appetite stimulant one ml. twice a day. There’s no way to camouflage it like you do for a dog. Amber does not like people food, suspicious food, or anything different (that’s not counting lizard tails!). At the moment, Amber has quit eating and drinking and been vomiting. Hence, a hefty vet bill and now RX medicine. Continue reading

Rows and Flows of Angel Hair

By Fred Prout

Stuff! We’ll call it that. But you’ll understand there is a more descriptive word.
It’s the nasty stuff that gets in our head, from time to time, and turns a bright, sunny day cloudy. It makes us negative. Blue. Depressed. We all go through it.
It’s part of our nature. It can hit us at any time. Sixty to zero in no seconds flat.
Intellectually, we understand that if we are able to read, have enough food, and
a friend, we are among the most fortunate creatures in the world. Reality can be different. Big time. Continue reading
