Penelope Hepworth, In Memoriam

The Timber Valley flag was lowered in honor of Penelope Hepworth, formerly of lot 204, who passed away on October 6, 2023. Robert and Penelope Hepworth purchased their membership in Timber Valley on December 4, 2012. They spent their time in Timber Valley and also in Kent, Washington. Robert passed away July 9, 2017.

Penelope remained at Timber Valley after Robert’s passing. She had many careers over her lifetime. She was a business owner, florist and even a performing clown. She loved her beloved dog (pet), Angus, who recently preceded her in passing. Serving on a committee with Penelope in the early days one was amazed by her intelligence and calmness. Penelope is survived by her daughters, Kristen Bruhahn and Michelle Geddes, both of Washington.

Psychic Strings

A recent conversation with T Rex. About weirdness, coincidence and who knows what.

“I Was never going to tell this story. It is a 100% true account of, probably, the weirdest event of my life. I didn’t want to share it because it is so weird I didn’t think people would accept it. I recently mentioned this to a friend. She said, “ You’re weird and we accept you.” So here goes. Continue reading

Stop, In the Name of Love… Before you Break… Someone.

I’m sure most of you have seen this new addition to the intersection near the office.  I’d like to thank everyone who wanted it, who spoke up for it, who voted for it, and who installed it.

The intention has always been to take steps to make the area around the office and that intersection a little safer. We have a lot of congestion at times in that area, and having everyone slowing down for the Stop sign sure seems like a good idea, especially for walkers, bikers, and those with walkers and wheelchairs.

By the way, those colorful markings on the pavement around the sign are from the “call before digging” locator service, who we use when digging anywhere in the Park.

And Thank You for Stopping.

Emergency Response

Timber Valley emergency preparation is terrific. During the recent hot days, notices went out via Rainedout to let our residents know that the Clubhouse was available as a cooling center. Hummingbird Lane is a great street to live on. We care for each other, and here is an example of what I am referring to. During the 107 temperature, our Block Captain, Rachael Smithey, and Co-Captain, Dar Hoch, went to each site to see if the resident was okay and if anything was needed. They made sure everyone had the alert on their phone to receive alerts.

Update to Rules and Regulations – Watering of Grass Lawns on Member Lots

At the August 17, 2023 Open Board Meeting, the Board of Directors passed a motion to insert this paragraph into the Rules and Regulations.

Lot Maintenance:
4. Due to the increased cost of water and sewer absorbed from the City of Sutherlin, watering of grass lawns on Member Lots is prohibited. Other plants may be hand-watered as needed, but a hose may never be left running unattended.

Everyone’s understanding and cooperation is greatly appreciated!

Ad Hoc Electric Committee has First Meeting

by Jill Goldman

On Tuesday, August 22nd, nine of us (including the park manager) got together to discuss the electrical situation in the park and to brainstorm the best ways to address it. The problems we have with outages during hot weather, the right equipment to test the circuits to ensure the equipment is functioning properly, and how we can best educate the park members about limiting their usage when necessary are some of the areas discussed. Today was an organizational meeting, and we will be getting together next week with information gathered by individuals so we can create a plan.

Electrical Usage Tips

As we approach hot days (say ~90 degrees) at Timber Valley, our electrical usage has to be considered.

It’s not how much we use as how much we use at the same time.

Anything we can limit from 4PM to 7PM will really help.

1. One A/C at a time is the Timber Valley policy.

2. Switching off the electric option of our water heaters, and either leaving it off or using propane.

3. Using propane BBQs as much as possible.

4. Limit microwave usage.

5. Those with laundry washers/dryers please limit usage to non A/C times.

So, be creative. Your neighbors will thank you.

Your electrical committee.

IF YOU FIND A TRIPPED BREAKER, PLEASE FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ON THE PANEL.

Blue Zones in the World

Social Hour Friday, August 11th, 3pm in the Clubhouse
Have you ever heard of the Blue Zones? These areas have been identified as places where
people live far longer than the global average. Those living in these zones suffer fewer health issues such as cancer, heart attacks, cancer, strokes, obesity, and dementia. Studies indicate the folks in the zones share certain lifestyle activities.
Blue zones include certain areas of the following countries, including Okinawa, Italy, Greece, Costa Rica, and in the United States, Loma Linda, California. The interesting thing is when the population of the zones was invaded by modernity, death rates increased at earlier ages.
Juliete Palenshus of the Thrive Umpqua will tell us about the formation of the second Blue Zone project in Oregon. She will let us know where to shop and identify restaurants that have blue zone-wise items on the menu.
Come and enjoy our fun, snacks and information.
