Second Chances

Since losing Ed, then DeDe and finally Dolly, I wasn’t sure I wanted to open my heart to future loss again. I was fine, no dog bowls, toys or dog beds cluttering the house. I still got up to feed Dolly and take her out before remembering she wasn’t there anymore. While walking in the park I kept seeing Bob and Rosie, Jim and Peaches and Kris and Cali. Kris told me about Soul 2 Soul where she had been a foster mom to a couple of dogs, then Cali. Cali stole her heart and she adopted her. She explained I could foster until I found the right dog or just continue to foster. Donna Clark and her partner Eric Berg run Soul 2 Soul. They take in dogs and foster them out until a forever home is found. All vet care and food are provided while fostering. It sounded good to me so I called for a home visit and filled out the paperwork to see if I qualified. I did. I told Donna what I was looking for: a small female fuzzy dog that would not jump a two foot fence.

A week or so later Donna and Eric made a trip to Southern California to pick up a dog. They were going to check a couple of shelters that they are affiliated with to maybe find a dog for me. While there Donna got a message that a little dog was on the side of the road near their motel, abandoned and maybe hurt. Donna went and got her – a small fuzzy female dog! She was matted with stickers, burrs and ticks. Donna called me and sent a picture. She said she had an appointment with a vet but need a name. I suggested Keri. At the vet she was examined, given a Rabies shot , antibiotics and Bravecto for the fleas and ticks. She was blind in one eye, had had several litters and had an embedded foxtail. They guessed her at 6-8 years old. With a haircut and clean up she was really cute. She was listed as found and began a 30 wait to see if she would be claimed.

After a long car trip she arrived back here and Donna brought her to me. An appointment was made with the shelter vet. She was evaluated again and guessed her age as 8-10. She was scheduled for surgery to spay, clean her teeth and remove the fox tail. I met Donna at the vet the next day and picked her up along with more antibiotics and pain meds. She right away showed that I am her human. She is such a sweet little girl and loves to snuggle. As she feels more safe, she shows her personality. When we walk, she is greeted by people here in the park who think she is a real cutie. They love her ears.

Of course I could not remain a foster, so we adopted each other as soon as her 30 days were up. She is officially Keri Len Bonham. She knows she is loved and I know that she loves me. Keri has a second chance and so does Kris’ Cali. Soul 2 Soul runs on donations. Many of the rescues lately have needed surgery and extensive medical care. Donna and Eric save many dogs slated for euthanasia. They need fosters, adopters and help with vet bills.

Keri and Cali are two success stories but there are many who still need to be safe and loved again. Second chances are good for the dogs and the humans who open their hearts. Soul 2 Soul is on Facebook but needs help with their website. You can read the stories and see pictures of the dogs on Facebook. Timber Valley members are known for their compassion and willingness to help those in need. Keri’s expenses where taken care of by generous people who donated to give her a second chance.

I am a happy dog mom again and cannot imagine life without Keri. She informed me she wants to be an only dog for now. Once Keri feels secure, I will probably foster again. Who knew I would get a second chance too.

In Memoriam, Keike Johnson

Her name was “Cake-ee” not Kee-key and with gentle good humor, she would let you know. Few of us knew her real name was Virginia. Keike and her husband Bob were well known in the park; attending many functions including games and movie night. Right up till the end, Keike played a rousing game of Chair Beach Volley Ball. Everyone enjoyed knowing her and called her a sweetheart.

Keike was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1936. She and Bob were married for almost 56 years. She had four daughters when she and Bob were married and they made a loving family. In 1992 they began travelingand after a few years were bored so they began working in RV parks and hosting in National Park campgrounds. In 2012 they first came to Timber Valley and on April 22, 2016, they moved into Timber Valley SKP Park.

Keike will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Bob intends to remain in Timber Valley as long as he can.

Social Hour July 21st

David Smith from Edward Jones Investment and Financial Planning will be our speaker this week at Social Hour. Dave Kinder just opened a new office which is a neighbor to the Post Office. Dave Kinder is a resident of Sutherlin, has been active in our community, and is a former Rotary member. Kinder is happy to have moved his office from Roseburg. Dave Kinder is heading to Ireland for two weeks and has asked David Smith to speak about myths of Social Security, opportunities to grow your investments, and more about financial planning. If you are secure with your income-producing investments, just hearing about the financial health of our country and local area will be interesting. You could relay what you learn to your children.

Last week a group of us gathered during Social Hour and reviewed about six months of speakers we would like to hear from. The selections included: businesses, services, school system, city officials, service clubs, and our members, who will tell us about their hobbies and talents. There will not be a speaker the last week of this month due to the annual meeting and all the fun day activities.

Enjoy some wine and snacks with our great family.

Squirrel Droppings #2 or “BUT WHERE DO I PUT…?”

–by Fred Prout

Sometimes life gets in the way of living. Sometimes stuff gets in the way of other stuff and pushes some of that other stuff aside. For a while, anyway. Sometimes it ain’t all about you, Bucko, so, “Ride that painted pony “ etc.

For the past too long, my me has kinda been elsewhere. Most of it still is, but, recent events have given me the impetus to chronicle these events and share them with you. You have forgiven me many things over the years. Perhaps too, this delay.

Repost of Important Information – RV Electrical Use

Experienced RV travelers know that many RV parks struggle to provide electricity during very hot conditions. Timber Valley is no different. During the recent heat wave, an “Alert Sense” message asked you to run only 1 Air Conditioner. However there is more you can do to help!

Having a Washer/Dryer in your RV is a great convenience, but it can draw as much electricity as an Air Conditioner! Running both at the same time as 1 Air Conditioner is like using 2 Air Conditioners. Consider using the Washer/Dryer only in the cool morning.

The electrical element on Gas/Electric water heater and RV style refrigerators also use as much electricity as an Air Conditioner. Consider switching them to gas mode in high heat conditions. Convection ovens? WOW….MORE than an Air Conditioner.

If you are unsure how to run RV appliances on gas, please don’t do it until you get help from your favorite repair person.

The following chart shows the electrical “amp” draw of common electrical appliances. Consider how you can help keep our electricity “flowing” in high heat conditions. Dirty or poorly maintained air conditioners draw more “amps” than shown.

Air conditioner 13  Iron  8
Coffee maker  12  Microwave  8
Convection 15 Refrigerator 3.5
Converter (charging)  8 Space heater (1600 watts) 13
Computer 2 Space heater (800 watts) 6.5
Curling iron 0.7 TV .5-1.0
Electric blanket  2 VCR 0.2
Hair dryer (1500 watts) 13 Washer/dryer  13
Hair dryer (400 watts)  3.5 Water heater (electric) 12

We all share in controlling our electrical energy use when these very high temperatures strain our Park electrical system.

Thanks for your cooperation!

The PCM Committee

Jacks & Jill Guidelines for Review

Dear Jacks & Jills Member,

As directed by the Timber Valley Board, we have been working hard on updating the Jacks & Jills guidelines and creating guidelines for kitchen use. We believe that we’ve made significant progress towards presenting the proposed guidelines for a vote at the Jacks & Jills meeting on June 26.

To help ensure that all Jacks & Jills members have the opportunity to review and comment prior to the 26th, a copy of the proposed guidelines has been posted on the Timber Valley Website. Printed copies will also be available at the mail room. In addition, we are randomly distributing copies to various park members. If you are one of the recipients, feel free to share your copy and/or discuss with park friends and neighbors.

For any comments, questions, or concerns, email dvanwest47@gmail.com, text or call me at 714-273-0743, or simply come by Lot 182. Please submit your inputs by Friday, June 23 so we have enough time to include them for discussion at our monthly Jacks & Jills meeting on June 26.

Thank you so much for your time and attention!

Laundry Woes … or Whoas!

Yet again, the Park has had to call in a service technician to repair the washer and dryer doors. It seems as though the doors have a “plate” that holds the door in place. Those using the doors as a “leaning tool” or a “crutch” have actually broken the plate. This last service call cost you, the members, over $600 in parts and labor to replace them. So … “Whoa” or “Stop” using the doors to lean on. Sorry for the repetitiveness and yet another “DON’T DO” for the Laundry room, but this is becoming an issue and a very expensive one at that!

I DID WHAT???

By Fred Prout

Sometimes the most frustrating and aggravating situations can turn into fun stories. Ordinary, every day chores can get you so mad you have to work hard to find the funny side. An eye doctor’s appointment that went completely sideways for example. Telling some friends about the misadventures involving new glasses, I unintentionally said the words that became the punch line for this story. So I took the punch line and built the story around it. Suddenly, all the pent up anger and frustration of over two months went poof. Gone. This whole story is intended to get to the punch line. So, no peeking. No matter what. Really!!!

Not too long ago, I went to Doctor Strabismus for an eye exam. Nice Doc, friendly staff, state of the art equipment, what could go wrong? Ha! Finish exam, pick out frames, get trifocals placement, give insurance card, pay copay. “We’ll call you in a week or ten days.” Now, for those of you who may be unfamiliar with trifocals, the top part is for seeing distance and most of what you want to see. The middle part is to see things like the dashboard of your car. Speedometer and such. Very important. The bottom is for close work like reading. Or writing.

Remember. No peeking. I’m watching.

Glasses are ready, walk into the office and Frau Blucher smiles and hands me my new glasses. Nice new case and a lint free cleaning cloth at no additional charge. Right away I realized the dividing lines are misplaced. If I looked straight ahead I had to look through two different parts of the lens, or, wear them halfway down my nose. To their credit, they did include a prism in one lens. Without said prism, I see double. Not good. So Frau Blucher smiles and says “No problem, I’ll have them remake the lenses.” Two weeks later, new lenses are in. They put them in the frames, and, double vision. No prisms. Back they go. I might mention that my customary patience and sang froid are starting to be slightly stretched.

Remember, no peeking.

Three weeks later, having not gotten a call, I have to call them. They check the lab. Glasses were sent, but, never received. “We will call again and expedite.” Magic condescending words.

After a total of two months and almost two weeks, I got tired of playing nice. I walked to the office and insisted on speaking with Doctor Strabismus to get this fixed. Frau Blucher stated the doctor is not in but she would call the lab. By this time, the steam is billowing off my head. Apparently the lab would not cooperate and I got really, I guess, pushy. Frau Blucher goes into the back and comes out with a check. Refunding my copay. It’s signed by the doctor who is not in.

So, in total and absolute frustration, I drive to Costco, and a week later, I have my new glasses. Lines properly located, prism in place and Lisa adjusted them with a smile.

Ok. Thanks for not peeking. The punch line: In order to get a new pair of glasses, I had to make a spectacle of myself.

You. I saw you peeking. Shame on you.

OK, on three, BOOOOOOO
