The Yabbuts

by Fred Prout

No, I’m not taking a page from JRR Tolkien. No little critters scampering around like Hobbits. Yabbuts are but a verbal uttering of mental questioning. I believe so and so. Yabbut. No matter what you say or do, the Yabbuts are just waiting to challenge you. Any group of people talking about anything has at least one Yabbut lurking. Ready to pounce. To challenge whatever it is that is said.

Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not being critical of them. After all they are what piques the interest for further and better discussion. Without the Yabbuts we are left with one option. One set of facts. No way to reach into back part of our brain and share something that we learned. And maybe forgot.

The Yabbuts can make us think. Analyze. Maybe even change our position on something important. A chance to learn. Be better. If a person challenges your thinking, they are not challenging your values. They are usually giving you an opportunity to better explain yourself. Maybe even to better understand yourself.

The little girl explaining her ambitions to her brother, ” and when I grow up, I’m going to be a  scientist. “

“Yabbut ” ” Yes, yes I will !”

Chris Columbus : ” I am going to take this ship and find a new route to India “

Giuseppe Carrano: ” Yabbut “

Orville Wright :” I think this will work with one wing”

Wilbur : “Yabbut “

Without the Yabbuts there would have been practically no human growth over the millennia. The thoughts of centuries ago would be the same as today. Without questions we would be condemned to a lifetime of mediocrity. Still chasing rabbits for food. Not being able to read and appreciate the brilliance of this piece.

A Yabbut, delivered with a Head Butt, can leave you on your butt…especially if you consider yourself the GOAT and you’re unable to rebut.
