$2 Bills in Sutherlin

A memory from Helaine Hepworth…

As Timber Valley was just getting started, some of the citizens of Sutherlin were not so sure that we were important or an asset to the town. So the directors of the Park worked with a local bank and the park members converted their spending cash to $2 bills and then spent them in town. Local merchants, seeing piles of $2 bills in their tills, quickly learned that our members were indeed a valuable asset. That was 30 years ago. Sutherlin doesn’t need to see $2 bills anymore. They know we are a big part of Sutherlin.

Anne Arnette

The flags were flown at half staff on July 31, 2018 to mark the passing of Anne Arnette.  Anne and her husband James were long time members of Timber Valley. They left the park a few years ago and made their home in California.
James also passed away recently. Timber Valley sends their condolences to their family and friends.

Successful Tour of the Discovery Gardens

Gardens discovered is more like it! Fifteen people walked among over 20 different gardens getting a behind the scenes tour of work being done there by the many Master Gardeners. At an adjacent Victory Garden some gardeners were harvesting vegetables for donation to UCAN that are then distributed to local food pantries and community kitchens. Master Gardeners Jude Stenslund and Kish Doyle provided a very interesting and informative tour in an environment that beckoned us to linger and come back.

The Discovery Garden, at River Forks County Park, is open year round (decreased hours during winter). The Master Gardeners have developed this garden for community use and enjoyment. Their goal “is to enhance and preserve the beauty and quality of the environment by using sustainable gardening practices”.

Wednesday Ramblings

Addendum:  the diligent website crew editor missed the error in this posts title.  “Ramplings” was supposed to be “Ramblings”.  Oh well, we try.

Your diligent website crew has a couple new things to check out.

In an effort to bring more photos into the website for your enjoyment, we’re experimenting with a photo page with links to albums of some of the things going on at Timber Valley.  It’s currently under the “about” tab in the main menu… just click on the “photos” menu item. There you’ll see mention of recent events. Click on the event you’re interested in and you’ll see photos from that event. Clicking on the first photo will make it appear larger. You can use your arrow keys to flip through the album.

There are additional lots up for trade in the next few days.  And don’t miss the weekly Timber Valley Log that’s published every Wednesday.

Bob Feiler led an intrepid group on a walk/hike on the Happy Hill Trail this afternoon. If you haven’t checked it out, please do so soon. Here’s a quick pic of the group:

A few snapshots from Chapter 9’s Elkton RV Rally

Chapter 9 member Jerry Christensen (# 158) fishing in the Umpqua River that runs along side the Elkton RV Park, site of the first Chapter 9 Rally of the summer season.

Viewed from the road above the Elkton RV Park, one can see the Umpqua River flowing in the background. Most of the RVs visible in the picture are  Chapter 9 rigs.

Rallies usually build in free time when members can gather to play games or simply talk and exchange stories of their RV travels.

Shown in the above photo are (from top left) Pam (partially hidden) and David Sawaya talking with Jimmy Smith (# 197), and Jerry and Robi Sypkens (# 176). (From left in foreground) George Boykin (# 87) chatting with Anita and Bud Covington (# 140).

One reason for the popularity of the Elkton RV Park is its tranquil location. Being on the edge of the Umpqua River provides visitors the opportunity to relax, kick back, and breathe in the cool, fresh air from heavily shaded sites.

Art Hampton celebrates his 94th on June 18

Longtime friends Art Hampton (#94) (left) and Gene Schrader (#70) share a laugh at the Timber Valley Board Agenda meeting earlier this week.

Former Timber Valley member Maxine Riddell called Jimmy Smith and me on Monday night to let us know that Art will be celebrating his 94th birthday on June 18. So if you see the smiling Gemini, give him a big hug. And by the way, Maxine, we miss you lots. Please stop by and visit the park.
