Tom Binninger, In Memoriam

On June 2, 2023 Timber Valley’s flag lowered to honor the passing of Tom Binninger. Tom and his wife Margi became members of Timber Valley July, 2007. Tom was born in Oakland, California May 24, 1933 and had just turned 90. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary June 19.

Tom worked as manager for Longs Drug Stores in California and retired at age 52 to care for his father. Tom and Margi traveled for 12-13 years and crossed the United States three times. Margi says they put 110,000 miles on their motor home.

Tom was very active in Timber Valley Park. He enjoyed mowing the lawns and other landscape work. He formed and was very active in The Men’s Cooking Club. He volunteered at the VA where he accumulated 1,000 hours of volunteering. Tom was always willing to help anyone.

Margi fondly says, “He was industrious, generous and a wonderful husband. He will be missed by many friends and family.

Timber Valley just lost one of its truly unique members, with the passing of Tom Bininger. It is true that he was a member of the Men’s Cooking Group, but he was also a big proponent of a “Timber Valley Men’s Association.” For several years, he bought and brought hot dogs and beer and conducted an annual picnic for “just the men” of Timber Valley. It was all done in fun, and as a good natured way of letting us hold an event without the ladies involved. Each man in attendance was encouraged to tell his own personal story, including listing his life accomplishments, and it was both revealing and ego boosting! We learned that almost every Timber Valley man had been very successful in business before retirement.
Tom also led by example, as his health waned. He often attended Qi Gong exercises in his motorized walker. Tom Bininger was a great example for the rest of us, including his many hour as a volunteer.

Tom was a good neighbor and friend. He volunteered for so many things in the park from mowing to being a board member. This was his home and he was proud to be an active member of the community. He emulated the meaning of volunteer. The meals he and the men’s cooking group prepared were wonderful. His famous strawberry salad was a hit with everyone. He had a good sense of humor. He kidded about the time some of the women of the park picketed the “men only picnic”. He served his country proudly in the Navy. He loved looking out his window and watching the birds who came to his many bird feeders. RIP Tom….everytime I bake applesauce cake I will think of you and how you loved it.

Bless you Margi. Bud will miss Tom calling and wanting him to play bocci ball, as they a small rivalry going. Loved the times he would stop by on his little scooter just to visit and yell is Bud here. Prayers to you and family.
