“A Hard, Hard Rain”

by Fred Prout

Bob Dylan was a prolific songwriter. He was a major influence on the folk music scene. And maybe on some of our lives. The fact that he really couldn’t sing does not diminish his work. If you know the music to “A Hard Hard Rain”, try to hear it with the following adaptation:

Now listen my friends while I sing you a song
It’s hard to be right, and I hate to be wrong

The world’s not exploding
Our lives not eroding

But maybe it’s time to check what we’re doing
Some people are killing and others are suing

To get what they want or just keep it from you
No matter the cost that’s just what they’ll do

And a dark dark cloud gonna cover the sky
And those who have caused it won’t even know why

The right hates the left and the left hates the right
And we in the middle can’t get into the fight

We got left in the dust
But push on we must

Everyone’s lying and nobody’s trying
To sort out the bs that we’ve all been buying

Cause no matter what we all take our stance
And whatever happens, we can’t leave it to chance

And a dark dark cloud gonna cover the sky
And those who have caused it won’t even know why

Now is the best time to think a good thought
Cause this is a battle that has to be fought

Somebody somewhere gotta take up the slack
And sooner or later we’ll try to get back

To the days when we were all able
To sit at the table

And figure out how to beg steal or borrow
A way to make a brighter tomorrow

And a dark dark cloud gonna blow right away
And we’ll all enjoy a much brighter day

One thing we all need to keep in mind
We’ll all be judged by what we left behind
